D. Build a team of expert reading teachers |
The Headteacher: 1. Has appointed a Reading/Phonics leader with expertise in and experience of teaching phonics and with expertise in the chosen SSP 2. Gives the Reading/ Phonics leader dedicated, regular time in order to fulfil the requirements of the role (see below) This must be enough time to ensure they have a clear/up to date knowledge of all areas of phonics and early reading in the school. They must have sufficient time to ensure all teaching and intervention is of the highest standard and delivered by experts. 3. Ensures all grades of management (including the headteacher), teachers and teaching assistants attend the SSP provider’s training 4. Ensures that SSP training is provided for new staff throughout the year at the point of arrival, and that refresher training is in place. The Reading/Phonics leader: 1. Meets frequently with the headteacher to discuss the impact of each teacher on pupils’ progress, particularly those falling behind the pace of the programme 2. Provides opportunities for teachers to receiving coaching and to practise elements of the SSP 3. Assessment data is analysed to identify areas for practice 4. Assessment data is used to identify additional support for those falling behind the pace of the programme 5. Timetables practice times (weekly if possible) and ensures all reading teachers attend 6. Knows how to run practice sessions 7. Coaches reading teachers (who need extra support) during SSP lessons 8. Coaches reading teachers who support pupils who have fallen behind 9. Keeps a record of all CPD, practice and coaching sessions. |
